1/9th Battalion War Diary - October to December, 1915

OCTOBER
1st-2nd Battn. held newly captured line South East of LOOS - 3 other ranks wounded.
3rd Took over Billets in NOUEX-LES-MINES - Battn refitted.
6th Moved to MAZINGARBE and took over billets.
7th Took over a section of the line on North East side of LOOS. Strength in rifles 425.
8th 11 a.m. - Enemy opened a violent artillery fire and maintained this for 5 hours. A heavy machine gun and rifle fire also sustained.
4 p.m. - Enemy advance to attack in mass being strongly supported. Attack repulsed with severe losses to the enemy. Our casualties, 1 officer killed, 2 wounded and 98 other ranks killed and wounded.
9th Line still held - Congratulations received from Division and Brigade on conduct of the 8th.
10th Further congratulations from 4th Corps & 1st Army on work of the 8th.
13th 1 man killed and 2 other ranks wounded.
14th-31st Relieved from Line and proceeded to NOEUX-LES-MINES and entrained for LILLERS where Battn. went into rest.
NOVEMBER
LILLERS 1st Battalion at rest in LILLERS. Training
3rd Draft of 90 N.C.O.s and men joined battalion from 3/9th battalion for duty.
5th 2nd Lt. F.B. LEBELL appointed Battalion Scout Officer
6th Lt E. PAYNE and 17 other ranks went to FERFAY CHATEAU for course of instruction in bombing.
7th Company Serjeant Major P.P. Byrne awarded Medaille Militaire
15th Two other ranks went to FERFAY CHATEAU for course of instruction in use of Trench mortars.
8.45 a.m. - Battalion marched to billets in HOUCHIN. Training continued.
HOUCHIN 19th 10.30 a.m. - Battalion marched to billets in PHILOSOPHE. Began work of cleaning and reorganising billeting area there - road making etc.
PHILOSOPHE 21st 2nd Lieuts. R. DARLING and W. RAINE joined battalion for duty.
22nd 2nd Lieut. L.L.S. RICHER reported for duty with battalion. Draft of 46 other ranks reported for duty with battalion.
23rd Lieut. H.W. NEWTON and 17 other ranks went to FERFAY CHATEAU for course of instruction in bombing.
Lt. PAYNE and 17 other ranks returned from bombing course.
26th 5.30 p.m. Battalion marched out and went into front line trenches along west side of road from H25 a 87 to H19 c 79. The 1st Bn GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGT. was on our right and 8th ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGT. on our left. Snow lying on ground.
Between LOOS and HULLUCH 28th One man killed by sniper and three wounded by shell fire. Freezing.
29th One man wounded by shell fire. Thaw and rain. During the night battalion was relieved by 2nd Bn. WELCH REGT. and moved to reserve trenches in old German front line in G23A. Mud very deep in trenches causing all movement to be extremely slow and difficult.
G23A 30th Remained in reserve trenches.
DECEMBER
G23 1st In reserve trenches. Four other ranks wounded.
2nd 7 p.m. Marched to billets in NOUEX LES MINES, in K18
NOUEX LES MINES 3rd Training. Improvement of billeting area.
4th Training. Improvement of billeting area.
2nd Lieut. RICHER returned from leave.
5th Rest. 2nd Lieut. DARLING and 2nd Lieut. RAINE returned from leave.
6th Training. Improvement of billeting area.
7th Training. Improvement of billeting area.
8th 3 p.m. - Left billets and marched through MAZINGARBE to reserve trenches in G17B and D.
G17B and D 9th Improvement of trenches and making of shelter for troops. 2nd Lieut. ASHTON went on leave.
10th Same as 9th. One man wounded. 2nd Lieut. ATKINSON returned from leave.
11th Same as 9th. 8 p.m. Took over front line trenches H 19A08 to G18B86 from 6th WELCH. 2nd ROYAL SUSSEX on right, 1st GLOUCESTERS on left.
H 19A to G 18B 12th Weather wet and bad. Enemy fairly quiet.
13th Same as 12th. One man wounded.
14th 9 p.m. - Relieved by 6th WELCH and returned to reserve trenches in G17B & D.
G 17B and D 15th Improvement of trenches and making of new support trench.
16th Same as 15th. 2nd Lieut. LEBELL went on leave.
17th 8 a.m. - Took over front line trenches H19A08 to G 18B86 from 67th WELCH. LONDON SCOTTISH on right, 1st GLOUCESTERS on left.
H 19A to G 18B 18th Improvement of trenches and making of new support trench. 2nd Lieut. ASHTON returned from leave.
19th Same as 18th. Captain WOODERSON, R.A.M.C attached, went on leave, being relieved by Lieut. McFARLAND, R.A.M.C.
20th 7 p.m. - Relieved by 5th KING'S OWN ROYAL LANCASTERS and marched to billets in MAZINGARBE.
MAZINGARBE 21st Cleaning up. Large carrying parties at night. Draft of 26 other ranks joined.
22nd Training and fatigues.
23rd Same as 22nd. 2nd Lieut. MANSERGH went on leave.
24th Same as 22nd. 2nd Lieut. LEBELL retuned from leave.
25th Rest
26th 2.30 p.m. Left billets and marched to front line trenches H 25A85 to H 19A08. Took over from LONDON SCOTTISH, 2nd WELCH on right, 2nd ROYAL SUSSEX on left. One man wounded. 2nd Lt. ROBERTS attached to Brigade Pioneers.
H25A - H 19A 27th Trenches in bad state and very wet. Much work done on repairing and draining.
28th Same as 27th. One man wounded.
29th 8 p.m. - Relieved by 6th WELCH and moved to Reserve trenches in G 23 - one company in Reserve Trench in G 24.
30th Work done on improvement of trenches and construction of NORTHERN SAP REDOUBT about G 22 B 97.
31st Same as 30th. Lieut. DIGGORY and one other rank wounded during bombardment of reserve trench in G24.
